Himizu 2011
"Have a dream. You're a flower, one of a kind. Don't give up."
Granted I have only seen one Sion Sono's film and it was Love Exposure. I did not expect the switch up with Himizu. It's depressingly dark and heavy. A tragic and dismal reality lived by the protagonists who both have experienced abuse and abandonment by their very own parents. It was already tough for me to watch them getting abused physically and mentally and being told that…

Our Little Sister 2015
I've been thinking about the last film to watch this year and I decided on this one because I know Koreeda will deliver (also maybe an early start for Japanuary?). His gentlest film to date; just good vibes and acceptance. Two hours just flew by when you have a great bond like these sisters. Most importantly, this was set in Kamakura, one of my favorite cities in Japan! It's just so peaceful to see the beach and the railroad crossings.

The Substance 2024
I came prepared for the body horror sequences and it did not disappoint. I was disgusted in a very good way. The final act made me love it even more and gave me a good laugh the moment the title card showed "Monster ElisaSue". And when she put on that earring? Slay!!!! Everything is insane from the ground up.
There was this scene where Elisabeth was getting ready for a date but didn't make it because she kept comparing herself…

Emilia Pérez 2024
Such a shame that this was a mess. First off, this is an example of how non-trans or non-queer artists should not tell trans stories. A lot of depth and characterization was lost to superficial portrayal of being a transgender woman in Mexico, which is predominantly Catholic by the way. There's just less focus on the struggle of gender dysphoria and the issues of drug-related violence glossed over it.
As a musical, it was horrible. It didn't work for me…
