Had a bunch of strange historical inaccuracies that don’t pass the rule of cool. I also don’t really care for this as an adaptation. Final complaint is that Ben Wade is too evil to get to the end of that arc convincingly. All in all it’s still pretty enjoyable but the ‘57 version is a better movie and a more faithful adaptation.

Also naming a character Sam Fuller and having that character (almost) say Forty Guns, referencing an inferior western that came out the same year… come on now.

There is some stilted dialogue and the Fort romance scene is meh but God the Fort William Henry Massacre is the best non Bondarchuk musket fighting I think I’ve seen and redeemed it immediately. Also I’m putting that Huron council scene down as one of my favorite scenes of all time. So freaking amazing. So happy I own this on physical media so I can watch it whenever I please.

I try not to get too political on here, but for those of you who ramble on about the innacuracies of this film I encourage you to do some research into the actions of Green Berets during this conflict. No. Hollywood this is not ok. And everyone on letterboxd this isn't okay either. A romantic relationship between a junior in high school and a doctoral student is fucked up. Especially when the film emphasizes how immature and childlike Elio is and how adult and mature Oliver is. They're also both assholes but that's besides the point. This relationship is not okay, the age difference is not appropriate, they are at two very different stages in life.
