    Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

    Every time I watch a Ghibli film I think “now this is my favourite”. It’s amazing how despite being so earnest and unsubtle with its message, this is still fun and exciting and absorbing. The animation looks as fresh as ever, only the soundtrack occasionally betrays its age. A masterpiece.

    Less frenetic than I expected. A gruelling, blood-soaked cat and mouse game before the inevitable, implacable third act reversal. A post-Tarantino sheen on what could maybe have worked better as a more grounded, realistic film. It’s solid, charming, simple and straightforward like an 80s action movie, but for the same reasons, it rarely surprises. Feels like a film based on a meme.

    Can really feel the DNA of something like Die Hard in this. A lot of negotiating over radios. Funny and light but still real stakes. What a great era that Walter Matthau and Jerry Stiller could be the heroes of your high concept thriller. Imagine Speed with Larry David in the Keanu Reeves role.
