Reason to watch: Strauss’ music is obviously beautiful and there’s some good directorial touches by Duvivier. But it is also impressively boring and most of the characters are highly unlikable with the women particularly saddled with ridiculous parts. Most of the performers are underwhelming as well. Fernand Gravet makes for a totally uninteresting Strauss, Luise Rainer is so timid it’s almost bizarre and Miliza Korjus might have the tonsils for an impressive soprano, but is clearly not an actress and comes off one note despite her - very odd - Oscar nomination.

Reason to watch: Sidney is good and Lang - unquestionably one of the all time greats - always brings enough to the table to make a film worthwhile. But this is completely uneven, wildly flawed, fun and confused, entertaining and disengaging, well made and totally messy all at the same time. Reason to watch: Landmark horror film. The hardcore fanbase might give the impression that everything here is flawless. That’s not true. There’s plenty of dodgy performances, lapses of logic and odd pacing. Even the legendary score screams low budget and quickly put together, which is the case for the entire film. Reason to watch: Yes, the plot is too dumb, they’re too long in The Void and fights between invulnerable characters become repetitive and drags on. But I love the team up, I’m totally still aboard the Ryan Express, I liked a lot of the references and cameos (even though there’s soooo many), I had way more fun than watching most recent blockbusters and I was solidly entertained throughout. Deadpool says “You’ll never see a Danish flag on the moon, but fuck they’re happy!” Well, I was happy watching this.
