A masterpiece. Lynch takes the classic quest for Hollywood stardom and spins it into a Lynchian horror epic. Naomi Watts delivers her most accomplished performance as the ingenue who gets trapped in a noir labyrinth with a breathtaking twist in the last act. The horror is atmospheric and consuming. Glad I got to see it in the theater.

A compelling addition to the 46 ronin universe. Koji Yakusho in a memorable role as a faithful retainer to a felled war lord. Misunderstood and living in the shadows for 16 years, he fulfills his solemnly sworn obligation to his master: to raise the master’s child in secret and to marry her off when she comes of age. The plot premise subverts the gender stereotypes associated with the samurai film in ways the will haunt you. A tear jerker for men. And I mean that in the best way possible.

I loved how the plot premise was a clever allegory for the election. Taut thriller with great performances from Fiennes, Tucci and Lithgow. Wished Rossellini had more scenes. The deus ex machina in the final act made the film lose its way. Entertaining for sure but the political messaging lacks teeth.

Everyone has been talking about the casting and I agree it’s a casting coup. Exquisite period mise-en-scene, like a Vermeer painting. The horror plotting was amazing—given that we all know the story, having us sit at the edge of our seats like that was remarkable.

I love that for most of the film, Orlok is a sinister presence that exists in the shadows. And I love the physicality of Ellen’s hysterical fits.

I love how this remake creates a backstory…
