the masala film as a canvas, pushing its form, edges with incisive clarity.

I thought I'd be bored this time around because I rewatched this movie only like a month ago, instead of studying for midterms, but I just came to appreciate it more (watching it instead of studying for finals).

glad to see the abject terror of dementia, of forgotten faces, a life tucked away, being realized and explored. other than that, feels a bit too rich white people-y in sensibility

just felt a sudden pang of disgust for this movie out of nowhere. city of god is a vulgar cinema, voyeuristic and exploitative. a void of character filled by genre convention, drained of both life and empathy, a cruel gaze. the favela at once becomes immaterial, of a disembodied mythological/allegorical character, and reduced utterly to its material condition, or at least the material condition as perceived by the tourist's well-meaning disdain for the poor.

Watched countless times since I first logged this, and it remains hilarious every single time at every single point of the story. The comedic and dramatic sensibilities in this movie are flawless, engrossing every single person I've watched this movie with (even the oldies! Watched it with my thatha one wholesome summer evening and we had an absolute blast together ❀️. Watched it with ammama like yesterday and the movie made her break her bedtime!)

    There is a cinematic joy…
