The Last Showgirl 2024
Not quite sure why it was I liked this so much but I really did. The cast is very good, but particularly Anderson. Lots of contradictions and this is what the film seems to want to wrestle with - gender double standards, impossible binds we are put in by the warring forces of capital and tradition, the risks and victories of following your desires, self-knowledge vs fantasy, aging in a youth obsessed society / industry. Not a judgmental or didactic film, knotty and ambiguous. Hallucinatory cinematography.
Some of it feels not quite fully fleshed out, but I didn’t particularly mind that.

Joker: Folie à Deux 2024

Thought it was fairly decent, the negative reaction a bit overblown. Plot is slightly aimless, doesn’t really deliver on the folie a deux premise and Quinn character not really fleshed out / Gaga not given a lot to do, Fleck’s about turn near the end was a little inexplicable. Phoenix extremely watchable as in the prior film but again the character’s motivation seemed a bit obscure. Thought I’d probably be bored given length and critical reception but I wasn’t really. Quite enjoyed the musical side of it.
