    2001: A Space Odyssey

    ★★★★★

Is there a film of more epic proportions than Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey? This is the closest to a cinematic equivalent of Hegel’s Phänomenologie des Geistes we got. It is modernism at its peak. A meditation on mankind. Tonight, as a surprise, I took one of my best friends to the 70mm presentation of this masterpiece in KINO for his birthday.

There is an evolution to my appreciation and understanding of 2001: A Space Odyssey. My first-stage naive…

    ★★½

The Rodney Dangerfield fan club got together again to watch another one. And we decided to watch Easy Money, which has Dangerfield in his first leading role in a movie. He has stated that this role is the closest to his real-life persona — because of his singing and smoking pot allegedly. There is a scene in which he sees his female neighbour topless, which is different in the movie’s television broadcast version apparently, where she is seen wearing a bikini top. We did not watch the latter version, so we had a good time.

In terms of art, this is peak postmodern consumer capitalism. Almost cripplingly self-aware and moralistic, but still manages to be witty, reflective, fun and engaging, impressively catering to a wide variety of target groups — Barbie also counts as a stoner movie in my book mainly because Will Ferrell is in it.
