You can't outrun your past, just like you can't outrun who you truly are.

A powerful yet simple message. Even with years of pretending. Years of being another person. That's all it is in the end, pretending. Who a person really is, it’s something embedded in their bones, in their blood, their DNA.

Cronenberg doesn't waste any time here. There is little exposition or backstory, we get what’s necessary to tell the story from the characters themselves in a very…

The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil

    ★★★★

Ahhh this movie is the good stuff. We get a gangster flick, a cop procedural and a serial killer thriller (aka every genre South Korean cinema excels at) all in one. This movie is as cool as all the Motorola RAZR phones featured in it, which means it’s VERY COOL.

The gangster vs cop dynamics here are extremely entertaining. Ma Dong-seok as the calm and cool gangster and Kim Mu-yeol as the cocky righteous cop have awesome chemistry together. Even…

A celebration of the coolness of two of the biggest movie stars of the past 3 decades.

As we continue to see the rise of IPs, studios films like A24 or more young director driven films from the likes of Robert Eggers and Ari Aster, we continue to see the decline of the classic Hollywood movie star. It seems Tom Cruise is the last one of the old guard holding on to the side of an airplane with all his…

    Cure

I signed up for the Criterion Channel just to watch this.

Cure was a massive disappointment. One of those films that makes me go crazy...questioning why it is held in such high regard. I can take slow burn, abstract and subliminal. What I can’t take is obtuse, uninteresting, pretentious and worst of all boring. Cure seems to be aiming for the former but feels more like the latter.

This is a slog of a movie, without a single character to…

    Time Share

    ★★

Beautiful cinematography and a surreal dreamlike atmosphere can’t save Time Share from its undercooked ideas, dull pacing and poorly developed characters. There are interesting themes here to be explored but just when things start to fall into place...it just ends.
