Eleven years after, still the finest moment of Roger Deakins’ lighting and shooting life. And still a top three Coen movie in my eyes. The best Western since Unforgiven. Is there a shot in this movie that isn’t just absolutely perfect? A line out of place? An edit off rhythm? The music might be the least best part, and even that has a strong central motif that flows through the movie and peaks precisely when it needs to.
Perfect movies are rare creatures, and the Coens have more than a fair share of them in their stable. But this one, it’s a prize among prizes.
