I wouldn’t mind the attempt at kraken reputation rehabilitation if this wasn’t vile anti mermaid propaganda, they already get enough difficulties with being accused of malicious sirens who cause shipwrecks as it is. Adam Elliot's always had a knack for exploring people on the fringes of society via his "Clayography" take on stop motion, treating them with a healthy amount of respect and compassion while also carefully walking that tightrope between light and darkness. This is easily his most refined statement to date, bringing the themes he first played with all the way back in 1996 with Uncle and realising them to their strongest extent. The themes are highly challenging but the ending is pretty uplifting; the idea that people can eventually recover from trauma given time. The stop motion is gorgeous and ties it together. Better check out that guinea pig car anime sometime to get the less confrontational side of this guy’s work.
