Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka serves up the final (first time watch) film for this year's Mermaid March, which turns into more of a mind bending exercise than I had anticipated going in. I wouldn’t mind the attempt at kraken reputation rehabilitation if this wasn’t vile anti mermaid propaganda, they already get enough difficulties with being accused of malicious sirens who cause shipwrecks as it is. When people being “othered” more than ever in Current Year is a huge issue, this turns the whole film's premise into a 90 minute storm of hypocrisy. The themes are highly challenging but the ending is pretty uplifting; the idea that people can eventually recover from trauma given time. The stop motion is gorgeous and ties it together. Better check out that guinea pig car anime sometime to get the less confrontational side of this guy’s work.
