Devil and the Deep 1932
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
We need to bring back wild rides like this and History Is Made at Night.
Where did the navy keep finding all those five-star studs? No wonder Laughton went insane - Cary Grant looks so young he looks like a Cary Grant impersonator.
Also, we're treated to an early 30s submarine evacuation sequence. What doesn't this movie have?
It's a shame the direction's pretty funky at some points, and Gary Cooper's given nothing to chew on for the first hour of a 70 minute picture.

Crime and Punishment 1935
Does an admirable job of condensing the novel down into so short a runtime with some interesting plot changes - but while I can't speak a word of Russian it feels like the screenplay's left an awful lot of both the heavens and the gutter on the cutting room floor
Porfiry's amazing though, the Ur-Columbo

A Bucket of Blood 1959
Dick Miller's literal (mis)reading of cooler people's throwaway fads and poses gives this an oddly timeless touch. I'm sure there's a terrible essay about radicilisation to be had in here somewhere. More importantly, but not unrelated, is that he's simply an idiot simmering with feelings he can't quite parse.
And what a great example of Corman's clean, unpretentious style - the kind of thing ripe for a remake that makes it an extra hour long, and even more on the nose while pretending not to be.
