Finally got to see this! Overall it's a very well-done slow-burn domestic drama with wonderful cinematography, charming characters, the ocassional curious banter and dialogue, and artistic value. The muted intro and credits without any music to fill the space remind me of Terrence Malick's films. The cinematography reminds of Roberto Begnini, the whole directorial set up and vision of the Italian neo-realist wave of the 1940s and 1950s. The music was well-incorporared cinematically in its well-done film editing. The director and stage direction did well with the setting of the 30s and 40s and with the whole atmosphere of the film. It reminded me both of Casino and Sinatra's Robin and the 7 Hoods. Terry Stone's performance made the film and he reminds me so much of Paul Giamatti, moving at times and dynamic, a class actor. Leo Gregory reminded me of too many other actors: Adrian Brody and Rami Malek among them. Josh Myers of Christian Bale. Very well casted. There was certainly madness, mayhem, and chaos!

Whoa, this gives me Hitchcock vibes: Psycho, North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief, Notorious. The POV camerawork and cinematography and musical score near the beginning. A little bit of Double Indemnity. Was Truffaut influenced by Hitchcock before his involvement in the French new wave cinema movement? This is old school Hollywood noir, like Bogart's Beat the Devil. Lengthy for what it is, but quality.

This reminds me of so many things: Scorsese's animation of Hugo, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his magical realism, the old film effects of Fellini and his own fictional set for his director played by Mastrioanni in 8 1/2, the Matthew Kneale child POV novel of When We Were Romans. I loved the imaginings of the outsourcing of the script he was relating to his song, his frequent spacing out bring the memories of his wife back to life in the present.
