Where to begin...
I suppose let's start with the fact that this was billed as a horror film but does not deliver a single scare...save for the arguably anxiety inducing first shot.
I appreciate the use of the camera as a character (being the "presence") but that's where my appreciation ends.

To start, Robert Eggers had huge shoes to fill working with this IP. With Herzog's magnificent adaptation of the tale an impossibly high bar was set for future iterations of Nosferatu. As such I can recognize that I went into this film with high expectations. However, I feel as if more than simply not meeting that bar Eggers has sacrificed what initially made him such a standout new filmmaker to watch in favour of pleasing general audiences and studios.

The film is undeniably gorgeous. I don't really understand the outstanding praise for this film in particular, I find the director's other films to be far more engaging and interesting (narratively at least)
