Of course the jump scares work. Oddity’s Damian McCarthy masterfully re-orchestrates all the tricks and tropes of horror classics to build tension, scare, haunt and tell a great ghost story.

After the terrifying rabbit of predecessor 'Caveat', McCarthy introduces yet another iconic nightmarish figure at the centre of a movie, this time carved out of wood. A beautiful, tender, complex and elegantly subtle portrait of a relationship. Oh, and thanks for making me discover a new kink: Paul Mescal doing Tai Chi in short shorts.

This movie feels like a great magic trick. Showy, over the top, ridiculous, scary and funny by skillfully controlling and misdirecting attention and expectations.
The whole spectacle almost leaves you blind to the real monsters of the story which is the only shortcoming, but boy what a fun ride.
