This is the most devious piece of delectable candy flavored medicine ever put to celluloid.

Varda leaves all of the subtext up to the viewers with a secret handshake and a nod. If you come out of this film feeling everything is happy, that everything turns out all right for Francoise, then a serious look in the mirror and some hard deprogramming is in order.

The nuanced levels of pressure and coercion from all sides make this film so compelling and brings me back to high school in a real way. It’s hard to want to be wanted, and it’s hard to manage expectations. This movie handles both without falling into didactic tropes.

Super fun and pointed. Some of the comedic timing is great, and the tonal shifts are wild! Dabney Coleman’s blustering buffoonery can’t be beat.

Who is this movie for? It’s not for the comic book fans because it has nothing to do with comics. It’s not for Todd Phillips usual Frat Bro demographic because in this film they are the demonized enemy. It’s not for film buffs because it is a directional mess, listless, meandering, and unsure of itself.
It’s not for the casual movie person because it follows very few conventions. It’s not for the radicals because the politics in this film are…

Super fun, meta, wry, and somehow earnest and heartfelt, while being laugh out loud funny. This film has a great message and does a good job of juggling a lot of things.
That being said, I wish the message was less didactic, I also feel like there are holes in the character arcs and motivations, i feel there are quite a few scenes missing, and ready for the Gerwig cut.
Making the executives of Mattel simple and silly as opposed…
