Not the most eminent Burton vehicle, but one that I am oddly fond of. The story is a mess and the filmmakers seem at a loss to make any character motivations clear. All the same it looks fantastic. Shot by the great cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, it captures the same rich textures and desaturated lighting of his past works, in particular Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Inside Llewyn Davis.

It’s pretty good - I don’t want that to sound too flippant but I only mean to say that despite the well-made display of its cinematic trappings and its earnest performances, it is in no way worth either the outrage or the grandiose praise that has been heaped on it since release.
