When I saw the log line of Jones losing her co lead from the past 3 films I thought that would purely be a way just to get her back in some rom com hi jinx. Which it is for the first act and that leads to it being the weakest part of the film.
But I wasn't prepared how much soul, heart, and melancholy acts 2 and 3 would have. I kid you not I don't think I've cried…
More fun here to be had with than the second. Likely the combo of a much fresher plot line and a new decade.
You can't help to think how much better it would've been if they got Grant back. It feels written and even shot for Grant but alas Dempsey is a fun addition.
Also all the news spinster stuff got me good, "what a loss, he'll be sadly missed....but he was responsible genocide and the death of over 10,000 innocents...well you can't say he was boring". Great gags throughout.
Up there with Pulp Fiction or Memento as one of the best non-linear films. Tons of greats moments and twists that you worry could be for shock follow but all get paid off and feel justified.
Willa Fitzgerald is a lighting rod here. STAR making performance and one of my favourites this year. What a wild ride.
