It's no 2001 and it's not trying to be. Very weird inversion from the original film that I don't hate, but I definitely have with this. Space scenes look REALLY bad, some weird politics between Russia and the US (I guess this was made in the middle of the Cold War but still), and answers some questions from the first movie that are better left unanswered. This was made before the big sequel boom, so any fan service that we would have in modern sequels wasn't there, and any references to the first movie are completely necessary to telling the story.

THE ACTOR FOR MOONWATCHER WAS A MIME AND GAVE HEROIN TO JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO???
Way better on a second watch, this is so much better than any sci-fi made before, and eclipses almost everything that came after. Might meander a little but it just adds the the atmosphere of of the movie. Insane shit
