    Mind Body Spirit

    ★★½

This film is predictable, derivative, amateurish in its execution, and refreshingly earnest in its social satire. Mind Body Spirit is here to make a point about the vacuousness of consumer culture and the dangers of "returning to tradition" without thinking critically. It's not subtle -- quite the opposite -- but the filmmakers accomplished their goals, and I respect it.

The Fall of the House of Usher

    ★★

This series tries to be many things: a prestige horror-drama, a satire of capitalism, a commentary on the opioid epidemic, and an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic oeuvre. It's an ambitious pitch.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The result is overstuffed, kitchen-sink storytelling, replete with dull jabs at world events and self-indulgent winks at the literary audience. The cinematography is decent and some of the performances are strong, but the writing is insultingly ham-handed, and that undermines the whole affair.

    History of Evil

What it wants to be: a reminder that America is haunted by white supremacy, and that even "good" men can be seduced by power.

What it is: a weak imitation of The Shining, with fascists.
