This is really incredible, my favorite of the 2020s so far (only Tar and Killers of the Flower Moon really come close), and certainly up there among 21st century films in general. It seems very much like it's going to be one thing -- the first 45 minutes or so I found myself rolling my eyes at typical Murakami schtick -- but it goes in a different direction and lets the characters really breath and develop in a way that…

The Duellists 1977
Great movie, makes sense that they let him make Alien after this. Everyone talks about the fights and the visuals, which are incredible, but it really does get you into the mindset of these insane, alien people from an insane alien era that in fact looks deceptively like our own, despite their actual alienness. Really strong entry in the 'short, accessible movies that movie sickos will also enjoy' canon, which comes in handy every year for the holidays.

Cléo from 5 to 7 1962
I actually can't articulate what I liked so much about this film...saying it feels 'authentic', or 'lived in', or that it gives characters 'room to breath' is at this point empty cliche. I don't know, I just like hanging out with Cleo, even though she's having a shitty day and a lot of people are kind of mean to her, for pretty lousy reasons...I don't think I, a physical person, would understand her very well in real life, but Varda lets me do that, and I'm very glad that she does.

Some Like It Hot 1959
Really good, Monroe is incredible, and for all the film's reputation of just letting her cook (it does), and being really funny (it is), it's really very perceptive and sensitive. It didn't hit me the way Wilder's best does, but very little does.
