  • The Pianist

    The Pianist

    ★★★★★

The Pianist tells the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Jewish pianist who experienced Poland's occupation from 1939 to 1945. His story is heartbreaking, brutal, compelling, and everything in between. This film does a tremendous job at portraying that story as I felt for every second of his journey. Adrien Brody brings a phenomenal performance as even without words I could sympathize with the scenarios his character endured.

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel

    The Grand Budapest Hotel

    ★★★★½

The Grand Budapest Hotel has to be one of the most stylistic movies I've seen. Given that it is my first Wes Anderson film, it certainly was a pleasing style of filmmaking. This can be seen visually through the framing of numerous shots to scenes that seemingly utilize gorgeous paintings and stop motion. It can also be seen through the tightly written script as the multi-medium story (a story within a story) and the well-timed humor complement each other astoundingly…

    Mickey 17

    ★★★½

While being extremely excited for Mickey 17 when it was announced, I had little expectations actually going into it. Perhaps that was for the better as I wasn't disappointed by its lack of properly exploring the ideas it introduces as others have been. It relishes in the absurdity that plagues American politics and it isn't subtle in the slightest. Its messaging is very direct with one scene even featuring a character literally spelling it out for the obviously Trump-esque Marshall.…

  • Kill Bill: Vol. 1

    Kill Bill: Vol. 1

    ★★★½

What I expected to be a rewatch of a phenomenal film turned into a strange realization. I believe I've only seen Kill Bill: Vol. 1 once before and I remembered it being a lot of fun. Now however, while still a decent film, is a far cry from what I recall. Its style may be its most defining trait, but it also serves to hinder the movie. There are instances where it's clearly trying to be edgy/cool, coming across as…

    The Thing

    ★★★★★

This handles horror the best out of any media I've seen. You have the characters constantly questioning each other as the Thing can imitate its victims. That alone brings so much intensity that it's almost impossible to tell who is real or who is fake. On top of that, its absolutely grotesque and vile visuals are incredible to witness. I was initially skeptical that the monster wasn't shown a lot, but I quickly became engaged with the enthralling narrative.

  • Kooky

    Kooky

    ★★★½

Kooky provides a cute adventure film with a bunch of equally cute makeshift "dolls". Their designs were satisfyingly creative, adding to their unique world. There are some evasion/chase sequences that surprised me by how entertaining they were. I would have preferred it if the story ended a bit differently, but that didn't stop me from having a fun time.
