Man, I forgot how much of an ass Jim Carrey’s character was. He’s very much the agent of his own destruction, which the movie manages to demonstrate and underline without explicitly saying - notable for a film with very little subtlety.
Outside of parting the tomato soup, I found the gag miracles a little lacklustre. Also surprising is how much death and suffering Carrey causes that is not undone. The film hints at some very dark ideas but never explores…

Exactly the kind of movie that made comedies a dirty word in the 00s, something they still haven’t recovered from. Most of the jokes have rape as the punchline…and somehow that isn’t even the worst of the gender politics in the film.
A shockingly thoughtful film about death, mourning, and the value society puts on lives. It takes seriously the concerns and experiences of children, and is beyond its time and ours in its thoughts on the value of animal lives. You don't expect a forgotten Disney live-action film from the 60s you found on Youtube to kick you in the heart as hard as this one does. I mean, it's a film about a cat that dies, goes to cat heaven…
I’ve been putting off reviewing this since seeing it in theatres last year. I know it’s a beloved film. But for me, this is guilty of everything people accuse Marvel films of - endlessly cutting off genuinely emotional moments to deliver an unrelated, deflating and crass joke, an egotistical edge to the writing that’s not as smart as it thinks it is, getting caught up in silliness and then sticking in a treacly moment to make it all “mean something”.
