The tone of this film gave me whiplash. It went from earnest musical numbers and characters with sunshine-y, aw-shucks attitudes to scenes depicting rape, incest, abuse and racism in the same breath. Great actors, beautiful songs—but a strange choice for a musical adaptation.
An excruciating watch, for many reasons. There’s no heroes in this story, just human scum and their victims. I know it was a choice to center the story around Ernest and Mollie’s relationship, but I didn’t buy his love for her for a second, and I found myself frustrated at many points in the film following his pathetic, greedy, passive character as he stupidly agonizes over whether or not to kill native people and take their money.
Scorsese has told…
Man’s ego will be the death of us all...but what a way to go! Nolan is a master at spinning multiple plates of storylines while simultaneously building tension to an operatic and devastating conclusion. Gorannson’s score sticks to your bones. I found the court hearing scenes more passionate than the sex scenes, which were a lil stilted and weird. All-in-all, a thrilling theatrical experience that will leave you quietly marinating/googling for hours afterwards.
