Sidney Lumet (and writer Joel Schumacher)’s heavily re-imagined film of the popular Broadway show is occasionally interesting but often puzzling and emotionless. By distancing themselves so aggressively from the original film and (show) book, a lot of the appeal and narrative propulsion were lost. Diana Ross, Micheal Jackson and Ted Ross all have good moments, but the film runs out of momentum well before it ends.

Jack and the Beanstalk 1952
Abbott and Costello are enjoyable, but like many of the Marx Brothers films, songs and a romantic subplot compete for the audience’s attention. I’d guess it’s too long (and the giant too scary) for little kids.
Also: Mel Blanc has a few voice cameos.
