I have not read the book, which I understand contains many important elements of plot and theme that both film adaptations sand off. And this movie definitely has moments that highlight Spielberg’s limits as a director at the time.
But I really don’t agree with the idea that Spielberg was totally floundering out of his depth, inappropriately bathing everything in a tone of wonderment because that was the only mode he knew. Yes, the opening childhood section has a storybook…
It’s very weird to see Cameron just make an action movie. It’s funny, but not quite funny enough. Not as politically progressive as Avatar, that’s for sure. A fascinating romcom plot: kind of creepy, kind of romantic, very much a fascinating look into the mind of a 40-year-old serial divorcer. Jamie Lee Curtis is certainly the most compelling character and performance. But mostly, the movie is good because the numerous action scenes are completely insane.
