a part of me really loved this film for its aesthetic, originality, absurdity, shock and delight. i found it enchanting, fun, challenging and textured. but another nagging sentiment i have is that bella is a female character so clearly written and created by men. the sexual awakening and aesthetics around the sequence are really beautiful, but within the setting i felt a bit unnerved. maybe it was the fact that she starts off a child, with an innocence and virtue which…
rewatched with christine - her first time, my second. paused momentarily every 15 mins to explain what was going on, not even meaning or metaphors etc. etc. just the plot of the movie (a very difficult thing to do for two tired individuals with very short attention spans). pat on the back for me for being able to do that successfully, with the memories of thorough explanations from xin at the front of my mind. this movie is far clearer in my mind in this rewatch and i appreciate it even more now. highly recommend, and not just as an concentration exercise!
drop dead gorgeous setting but that seems to take up most of my impression of the film - for me, I struggled with the slow pacing - and almost felt like i was waiting for things to happen (maybe also because my concentration levels and longer movies don’t go well together). yet them suddenly speaking in chinese seemed confusing (although great pronunciation, timothee!). am i the only one who had trouble understanding some parts of the dialogue?? something about the enunciation??…
