The Image 1969
A 2, but a special 2. Amateurish, questionably coherent, and certainly overlong (if for understandable reasons considering the incentives surrounding short film funding at the time), this nonetheless stands in British short-form cinematic history for being the first screen appearance of David Bowie and one of a tiny handful of shorts to get an X rating. An excellent premise, even if it fails to deliver. Very Aesthetic. If it were any good, it'd be great.

Herostratus 1967
"Putney Swope for pseudo-intellecutal assholes" quotes one of the film's *negative* reviews, and yet is exactly what makes it good. Giving Herostratus an unqualified five stars feels wrong -- it's a jumbled, flawed masterpiece, but it is absolutely, once and for all, a masterpiece, and it deserves no other rating. Herostratus is an artist blowing his brains out on celluloid and playing back the sodden film strip.
