This is fun, but not so fun mis-representing mental patients and medical interventions. I can see this to have a cult following especially for gore horror fans that are into the cheap jump scares and shocks, even though they are not done so well narratively and technically. I find a few scenes quite hilarious, but the funniest of all is Andy Lau and his Deadpool baby hand. Nick Cheung as an actor-director here is overly ambitious with its execution falling…

Sepet is the only Malaysian film which I can watch countless times and still be moved and inspired in the most genuine and loving ways. The late Yasmin Ahmad is a true Malaysian gem. And the story of Orked and Jason will forever live on. This time around watched this film with a small movie club and we had a wonderful exchange and discussion after.

Despite being a little preachy and quote-y (the norm in Chinese-language film writing), it is a rare gem of recent Hong Kong cinema with a daring take on the themes of death and traditions. It is also an earnest and moving depiction of relationship dynamics, as well as a thought-provoking social commentary on the Hong Kong society. A fascinating combo of Dayo Wong and Michael Hui as comedians acting in dramatic roles. The MPV is Michelle Wai as the heart of the narrative. Also, it is a very well shot and paced film, with gorgeous cinematography and assuring editing and direction.

An unexpectedly moving picture that had my tears rolling in my eyes. Director Guan Hu brilliantly uses the neo-western genre aesthetics and direction to tell a no-bull-shit and hard-hitting story led by the electrifying Eddie Peng and Palm Dog winner Xin the Black Dog. Jaw-dropping cinematography and wide-screen compositions, together with awe-inspiring blocking, action and visual and sonic storytelling, "Black Dog" is a vivid and triumphant cinematic work.
