In the beginning Las Vegas Corey refers to his party girl posse as “his Angels”. The first time I watched this it was kind of giving “The Substance for middle class guys” (positive connotation) but the second time I’m hung up on parsing it through the lens of that Corey Feldman allusion, which is unironically kind of heavy to think about

tragic, grotesque, and at times strangely whimsical in that goofy way you see sometimes in retro Japanese horror (director Hideshi Hino is of course one of the foremost masters of this tone in his manga as well). the sets, makeup, pacing & melodrama make it feel more like a stage production.

some of the most repulsive, gag-inducing body horror effects I've seen in my life!! the prosthetics are painstakingly detailed & feature textures straight out of my nightmares. have to recommend it based on that alone.

maybe the nostalgia goggles have just become permanently fused to my head but i keep ending up casually rewatching this one on a whim with other people and i must admit it’s more fun every time

unsure if other fans of the first few games tend to appreciate this movie More or Less wrt having that context in mind? but the set design is kickass, the game soundtracks were well-utilized, and the overall tone / vibe does a great job…
