insane that a big shot hong kong director made a gay film!! and he got best director at cannes for it!!!!! in 1997!!!!!!! worldwide queer rep is so westernised it just stuns me to learn that a movie in MY MOTHER TONGUE directed and acted by celebrities of MY CITY of the same generation as my parents is considered one of the best of the new queer cinema movement.

started bawling 30 minutes in but that's not THAT impressive considering i cry at literally anything so.
a bit on the nose with the hashtag feminism and i dont think the concluding message kind of undermines the nuance of the film but you know.. it's commercial cinema really so whatever.
still a good exploration of tradition + intergenerational conflict + family dynamics + immigration + death. themes of gender are definitely underdeveloped though
reminded me of lear!! someone needs to write a lear adaptation set in hk it could be sooo good..
