I really liked this movie when they had a small story arc dedicated to kids getting their periods, but when I heard the Romanian/other Balkan music during a harvesting scene, and characters started critiquing the wealthy, it was clear this movie was made in a lab for me personally.

This could have been like a normal, 90’s melodrama, but they had to keep that Delton Lindo/Erykah Badu storyline, huh? They could have left it out when adapting the story… Choices I guess.

This story lives in the same realm as Ikiru for me, because at first it lulls you into thinking it’s going to be a predictably saccharin story about the value of compassion, then it takes a gradual turn that sucks you in entirely. It’s 2.5 hours but there’s little I’d cut out, even though the ending’s a bit slapdash.

Also Toshiro Mifune will always be one of my favourite performers. His voice is so warm, even when he’s acting the sullen asshole.
