  A remarkable film that beautifully depicted aspirations and struggles of an 80s Taiwanese family over the courses of a few decades. Hou Hsiao-Hsien childhood memories seamlessly wove powerful thought of action taking the audience through the lens of a place when life was way simpler and people a bit more caring and loving. We follow a kid that rose through ardent responsibilities turned into a man that has been gone through various accomplishments but still seeks validations as a means of survival in an ever changing society.

  Some memories fade, others don't. Some people experience life through their achievements or through sorrows. These random moments in time are what makes us who we are and what we want to become. The fact that this film allows us to ponder on this very thought as a setting for lost souls going through a phase in the afterlife is deeply unsettling yet thought provoking.
