In Luca Guadagnino's foray into the mainstream American film circuit, we are delivered a raw declaration of love, lust, and sexual urgency. Layered with images of water, (a cold mountain stream, a sea where ancient statues are resurrected, etc.) the best way to describe this movie would be "wet." In a year that saw the resurgence of Stephen King's popularity, no other adaptation compares to the intimacy, trickery, and mastery of "Gerald's Game." Told with deft and efficiency, Flanagan crafts a suffocating nightmare that spirals into nearly unwatchable tragedies, with none other than Carla Gugino at his ship's helm. Gugino's descent into madness and vulnerability is one of the year's most extraordinary performances; both brave and fearless, she dives headfirst into the audience and creates an unspoken dialogue between viewer and performer. I cannot recommend this film enough to horror junkies and film buff's alike.
