    Hellraiser

Not inherently a bad *film*, but a poor sequel/adaptation. The enduring draw of the first two Hellraiser films is their distinctive, inimitable atmosphere--earthy, warm, wet, and sticky. Wallowing in Barker's unvarnished, unglamorous England and replete with tactile, tangible physical effects, they hold up to this day. Hellraiser (2022) eschews all of this--it's cold in tone and in palette, its urban American setting is as generic as horror films come, and worst of all, it looks dry to the touch.

Haven't even watched it. 11/10. A million stars.

    ★★★

Perfectly enjoyable, but overly long--there's nothing in it that jumps off the screen as needing to go, but in sum total a two-and-a-half hour zombie film shambles along like one of its on-screen dead. Pared back by 30 or 40 minutes this could easily have been Snyder's best work with no sense of urgency it pales beside his earlier Dawn of the Dead. That said, it's full of the kind of visual flair and galloping montages he excels at, with an opening sequence as good as anything he's put to screen.
