    Monogamy is back, baby!

After coming up with an ingenious way around the ghost POV problem in "Presence" earlier this year, the unlikely Soderberg-Koepp team-up is back with an even better rumination on marriage and dishonesty. Sure, it's ultimately pretty thin and assumes we care more about the mystery than we actually do -- but it's still a jazzy come-on that will get us through another summer of blue screens.

Koepp's strength has always been dialogue, and my ears were…

Robert Pattinson is the best actor, full stop. And Mark Ruffalo is the funniest man alive. Bong Joon Ho taps into his absurdist side here, much like with Snowpiercer and Okja; meaning I was the only one laughing in the whole theater.

really holds up. stacked cast, clear stakes, better than average dialogue, some nice optical effects work. you can hate Cage's wig and accent, but I appreciate that he's playing an actual character and is doing so earnestly, not with ironic eyebrow work. with all of these larger than life villains, you need the straight man to commit. most random/elaborate/satisfying villain death in all of '90s action. and a trans character no one makes fun of? neat.

wow the writing is so embarrassing. just wall to wall hilariously broad characterizations, painfully telegraphed emotions (he's slugging from a bottle while driving because he's SAD), and an annoying tendency to fill in blanks instead of driving the narrative forward. also the lack of one particular perspective for so many hours makes the final episode ridiculously predictable, and thus the entire series feels outright whore-mongery when the whole point is seemingly to avoid that.

plus, while the performances are diverting, everyone seems to be mugging instead of wrestling with authentic pain. it at least looks like Cuaron.
