My dad was on the phone with David Lynch just hours before I was born, getting Inland Empire for his theater. Truly an ominous start, isn't it? As if being the perfectly timed reincarnation of Saddam Hussein wouldn't be a scary enough prospect.

It must have been almost 6,000 days later I ever gave Lynch’s work a chance. The man unlocked something with Twin Peaks I didn't know I had. My entire film journey has a pre- and post- Lynch…

Roger Ebert never knew I exist, and now that he's passed, he can't. But I feel that, in a way, he does know me. Not me personally, but the way he's been the ambassador of film criticism to a new generation, and how even in death he remains the biggest inspiration to all those who have any interest in the profession. Really just the type or movie you could see yourself rewatching forever and ever. If not for the plot, then for the cars, fashion, and architecture of 1960s France.

He then directed Don’t Breathe, where young adults break into a blind man’s house but find the place isn't what it seems. Now, he's directed Alien: Romulus, which is about young adults breaking into a spaceship before finding out it's not what it seems. I'm beginning…

One of my favorite moviegoing experiences was when I saw a double feature of The Monster Squad with The Thing, and the former’s star Andre Gower, in town on a tour of his documentary Wolfman’s Got Nards, got up before it started. After talking about his work on the first movie, he told us all an anecdote about how he went to see The Thing as a little boy in 1982, where his little sister made the family leave after…
