mostly an exceptional little experiment, i became increasingly impressed as this went on. family drama masquerading as a ghost story, complete with fully-realized, troublesome dynamics that feel true. some contrivances are squashed by elegance and atmosphere. a cheap and cartoonish third act revelation is instantly overcome by a booming ending, equally eerie and emotional, closing moments that feel big enough to make you want to call the whole damn thing a masterpiece....

the clear precursor to GIRLS, one of my all-time favorite shows, minus a lot of the polish, minus a lot of the perfected comedic writing, and minus the crackling, perfectly-placed ensemble. regardless, the wit and the insight are there.
