I kept thinking about Hamlet during this rewatch, how they both only finally make a decision for themselves (and not out of self-preservation) at the very end.
I suppose I find all stories about ambition to be somewhat distasteful, since there’s always some form of power worship motivating them. The junkie-like simplicity of living for your job, it’s simple after all and you’ll be considered successful, envied. The movie improves considerably when it turns and starts to really consider the wages of striving, when the characters start to struggle with the insanity of “meritocracy,” or else reveal their inner snake. I feel like a lot of "hot young directors" fall into the kind of bad habits that are all over this movie: switching styles and tones constantly, positioning showpiece shots one after another after another, regularly dropping reference to their film teachers. There's always the Carrie shots, the Mulholland drive moments (lots here), the Vertigo scene (in this case, complete with Vertigo theme, on the very distant chance you may have missed the reference).
