This is a cracking good thriller, with Tom Cruise playing idealistic young lawyer Mitch McDeere who joins a small but prestigious law firm only to discover that it's a front for the mob. With the FBI on his back, he has to figure out how to get out without losing his career or life. Gene Hackman steals the show as Mitch's mentor Avery. The rest of the cast is stacked though, including Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook, Gary Busey,…

This is a curious one because it's worth seeing for Gene Hackman's complex portrayal of a bigoted, racist old man on death row. However, the rest of the movie is pretty meh with Chris O'Donnell trying in vain to get Hackman a stay of execution because he's his grandfather. Faye Dunaway is decent as O'Donnell's aunt, cautioning him not to stir up trouble (although she's way too old to be Hackman's daughter...maybe if they made her his sister). It's passable fare, but the least of Hackman's three John Grisham films.

This movie is just so much fun, with a miniaturized Dennis Quaid stuck inside a neurotic Martin Short. Comedic sci-fi shenanigans ensue. Meg Ryan is great as Quaid's journalist girlfriend who has to help Martin Short retrieve a stolen microchip so that when they get Quaid (and the miniaturized ship Quaid is inhabiting) out of Short's body they can return him to normal size and they have to do it before Quaid runs out of oxygen too. This is just…
