This thing is an enormous goddamn mess. But fuck. It’s right. And, at times, very good.
[To my friend who knows who they are: Timmy Chal. is genuinely wonderful in this.]
It’s so damn scared of humanizing its protagonist. Dick Cheney is a despotic son of a bitch, but without a window into his most human moments, where his proverbial mustache goes temporarily untwirled, Vice is often a surface-level compendium of his misdeeds - which you can almost hear Adam McKay reading from Cheney’s Wikipedia page, shouting with righteous fury. He tells us what the man did, but overlooks why. And there is always a why with people like Cheney. Something they want, and…
Creatively-bankrupt nostalgia-wank, reproducing the trappings of its betters without any of the subtext, intrigue, or imagination that made them compelling. From the imagery to the dialogue to even the score, it’s a lukewarm casserole of years-old leftovers.Â
A waste of lavish production design and outstanding practical effects, as well as David Jonnson’s excellent performance as the only interesting character. Maybe it’s on me for expecting more from the series’ seventh direct installment, but at least each of those other movies tried.
If imitation is flattery, this is fucking incest.
