Overly slow first two acts, and edited to maintain an uneasy sense of the verge of boredom, Tolkien delivers on showing how boyhood friends became a brotherhood on the eve of World War I.
It’s too bad that the editing choices were such to minimize and at the same time beat you over the head with the experiences that would form the basis of his Middle Earth creation. A different approach may have shaved off Time In a French Trench in exchange for more of the beginning of the great creation.
