  This is a complicated film and I’ve had to consider my assessment for some time before writing this.
  I can understand the fear and trepidation surrounding the subject matter. I can also appreciate the criticism of this film being a riff on Scorsese and others’ work without offering much new or more profound. The fact is though, that however fresh and radical an interpretation this film is, it does have a source material to honour, and therefore has the inevitable…

  Thoughts

  Entertaining- yes
  The essential story- basic enough, actually
  The story mechanics- conceptually incredible, overly complex in presentation..... entirely unnecessary for the actual story
  Characters- flat, Debicki was the only one who I cared about, Branagh was outstanding. Good performances but not fleshed our at all
  Sound- f**king terrible

  Seems story serves the time mechanics rather than the mechanics serving a story
