Clearly inspired by Wes Anderson in it's visual style, cleverness and affectless acting (i can't knock it; it's a deliberate choice) - while impressive I found universal language to be pretty dense and difficult to digest.

Sex robots are people too. People misogynistic assholes can program to murder others ok? I liked companion a lot. It's smarty written, well cast - and has a timely premise. Josh was a outstanding villain, MAN did the audience revile him. The real terror comes from the knowledge of how similar he is to people I know and have met before. The "everybody dies" ending felt a little anticlimactic to me, but for the most part companion is terrific.

I saw a photorealistic humanoid monkey get jerked off and then finish himself...... and then snort cocaine ....... so there's that?
The monkey choice really really REALLY doesn't work, in conception or execution. It's deeply distracting from the one part of this concept worth exploring: why people love Robbie Williams. Perhaps if the film acknowledged, even just in self awareness that Robbie Williams is being played by a photorealistic monkey humanoid I could see something here, but oof. This is…

    Nickel Boys

    ★★★★½

Granted I haven't read the book, but I think this is a movie about distorted realities; and the time we spend (literally) in the perspective of each character presents a different reality. the Nickel academy isn't just presented as horrifying and sinister - it's also shown to us a cult of sorts. Those in charge and those imprisoned fall into it's web in different respects, and the movie does such a good job of showing instead of telling, and scaring us without showing the audience anything gratuitous.
Gauntlet thrown. Deeply surreal, brilliantly shot and scored, and bursting with unique style.
