  This documentary captures a rough overview of North Korean history from the lead-up to the Korean War through about 2018. I especially loved the scenes of an older woman performing traditional Korean dances. And I appreciated the refresher on major powers' involvement in Korean governance. 

  Unfortunately, the footage actually shot in North Korea feels less vivid and relatable than footage shot in South Korea or the United States. The filmmaker was obviously pushing against state-imposed limits to capture the in-country…

  Electrifying musical numbers from Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, and Eddie Murphy make this movie worth watching. ("And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," "Listen," and "Fake Your Way to the Top" are my favorites.) But the pacing of the movie drags when it should zip along like one of the blockbuster musical numbers. I paused this film 2/3 of the way in to take a nap.
