THE DISTANT CITY
STATEMENT OF THE PROJECT: In ‘the Practice of Everyday Life’, Michel de Certeau argues about the relation between the body (subject) and the city (urban space). He uses the term ‘rethorical walkers’ to refer about the daily routines of people living in cities, through talking, walking, etc., making possible to build roads by subjects that can be understood as ‘ordinary language’ of styles and uses. In those spaces the past and the present converge. ’The Distant City’ shows scenes from The Magic Water Circuit in Lima during the twenty first century which are alternated with fragments of a text belonging to a letter written by Alexander von Humboldt to Ignacio Checa during the early nineteenth century. Present (image) and past (text) are juxtaposed to create a dialogue between a subject (past, aristocrat and foreigner) and urban space (present, popular and native) which trigger us to think about the idiosyncrasy of the city and disaffection towards it, where water flows from ornamental fountains which act as a veil to cover tensions. Thus, the video asks: what kind of time are we talking about in front of images from the present a with a text from the past? The video shows contemporary urban walkers confronted with a clash of times that could become an inexhaustible source of continuous review through the dialogue between images and sounds established from observational mode. LA CIUDAD DISTANTE
ENUNCIACIÓN DEL PROYECTO: En ‘La invención de lo cotidiano’, Michel de Certeau discute sobre la relación entre el cuerpo (sujeto) y la ciudad (espacio urbano). Utiliza el término “caminantes retóricos” para referirse a las rutinas diarias de las personas que viven en las ciudades, a través de conversaciones, caminatas, etc., haciendo posible la construcción de caminos por temas que pueden entenderse como ‘lenguaje ordinario’ de estilos y usos. En esos espacios confluye el pasado y el presente. ’La Ciudad Distante’ muestra escenas del Circuito Mágico del Agua en Lima pertenecientes al siglo XXI que se alternan con fragmentos de un texto que pertenece a una carta escrita por Alexander von Humboldt a Ignacio Checa a principios del siglo XIX. Presente (imagen) y pasado (texto) están yuxtapuestos para crear un diálogo entre un sujeto (pasado, aristócrata y extranjero) y el espacio urbano (presente, popular y nativo) que nos hace pensar en la idiosincrasia de la ciudad y el desafecto hacia ella, donde el agua que fluye desde fuentes ornamentales actúa como un velo para cubrir tensiones. Así, el video pregunta: ¿De qué clase de tiempo estamos hablando frente a imágenes que registran el presente y se confrontan a un texto del pasado? El video muestra a caminantes urbanos contemporáneos confrontados a un choque de tiempos que podría convertirse en una fuente inagotable de revisión continua a través del diálogo entre las imágenes y sonidos presentadas desde un modo observacional.
