New introduction post that’s hopefully less long winded than my old one:

Hello! I’m Fairmer and just leaving it at that here.

I’m a graphic designer/illustrator from Manitoba, Canada. I used to draw for fun all the time but college burnout followed by chronic pain becoming a thing in my life I fell out of doing it, so this blog is a place for me to do that again.

This definitely wont cover everything I’ll ever make art of/have made but fandoms and etc that I’m into include:

- Narnia (if you’re a narnia fan that’s the thing I tend to go back to the most)

- Nancy drew

- HTTYD/RTTE

- Musicals (my favourites are Hadestown, Legally blonde, the Secret Garden)

- various games, some favourites are Hades, Spiritfarer, Stardew, I was a Teenage Exocolonist

- shows like ghosts, atla, ducktales 2017, hilda, over the garden wall, dungeon meshi, etc.

Lol thank you! And yeah it is a play on farmer. My sister and I have a bit sometimes that’s just announcing “I’m a Farmer!!” With overinflated confidence. (We grew up on a farm.)

When I finally got her to play Stardew Valley with me she naturally then decided to call her farmer “Farmer”, and the farm “FARM”.

I ended up naming my farmer “Fairmer” because it just kinda was fun to say and have our duo be “Fairmer and Farmer.” It suited the playthrough.

So Fairmer literally means nothing it just kind of sounds fun when you put it next to Farmer and I’m terrible at coming up with usernames for anything new. I have a fondness for this one so I stuck with it.

It also kinda incidentally sounds like Faramir and I adore both him and Boromir in lord of the rings so it’s a bonus.

TLDR I named my character fairmer one time in stardew to match with my sisters farmer and the name stuck

I’ve been thinking about the Magicians Nephew, right now specifically Polly Plummer and in an attempt to get back into doing art outside of work.

I’ve been thinking of what she’d maybe look like in the book and then as she ages (except it turns out I have such a hard time visualizing the passage of time in decades I was not alive in)

most of the references I looked at for clothes was anywhere from 1900-1940s. Maybe some late Victorian in her younger dresses? Not sure. Mostly Edwardian.

I like to think of her definitely going to school, and then becoming a journalist. She’s super sharp and level headed in the Magicians Nephew, and also has an interest in writing.

Also she definitely wore pants.

I do a lot of drawing and I want to work on my cartoon style, I really like basic shaped characters if that make sense? Could you give me some tips with drawing like that? Especially when sketching, and different body types/hair stuffs 🥲 I would really appreciate it! I have so many ideas but I never put them to paper (or tablet in some cases lol) and I’d love to hear from someone with experience !!

Hey, thanks for the ask!! First thing I’ll say is I fully relate to having so many ideas but never doing them, I have a very long notes app file of art ideas. Also love that you love my Narnia stuff, it has also been a pretty big thing for me since childhood!

My overarching advice that’s more generic is keep drawing. In highschool I drew like every day (I doodled in pretty much every class I ever had) and I never really focused on a style, it just kind of happens over time. It’s also ok if it changes.

Figure out why you like the things you do(whether it’s another artists art or the art style from a show or movie) draw from life, sketch quickly (sometimes when I sketch I get too in my head and the drawing can be stiff. When that happens I draw a new one with that as reference but try to make it looser quicker.)

I’m kind of all over the place in my attempt with advice here, bear with me.

A thing that has helped me (and Iactively still do, as per my most recent art post) is doing studies. So just drawing what you see for practice. Sometimes stylizing it sometimes just literally drawing what you see. I like finding screenshots from shows I like and recreating them because it takes away the work of figuring out colours, composition, posing, backgrounds etc. and I can just focus on the technique I’m using.

I’ll always recommend looking at reference from life even if you have a cartoon style, especially if it’s people you like to draw learning how real life people look and move helps with drawing a stylized version. Look for shapes. Sometimes I “trace” over a reference photo but quickly and with simplified shapes to get an idea of what a simplified version of that body type would look.

If you like simplified shape characters, draw basic shapes and building characters from them, whether it’s literally a bill cipher triangle dude or you just incorporate a triangle in the main body of the character if that makes sense.

If you want to draw variety in body type and hair, make sure you have a variety of references! There’s also lots of great art tutorials out there so you can look for those too on most social media platforms and find something if you’re ever struggling with something specific like a specific hairstyle or a type of clothing.

Hopefully some of that is helpful, this is the best I could come up with off the top of my head.

Current obsession: I feel like I’m in between obsessions right now, it’s just a little bit of many things but none of them are like, hyperfixations like I normally have at least one going on. Like I don’t even have a food fixation right now. I was putting a lot of time into Skyrim recently (first playthrough ever) but I’m already losing some of the bonus dopamine from it. Hades 2 probably will be an obsession again when the next update comes out
