Alfred Métraux

The early ethnological works of Alfred Métraux are analysed bearing in mind his first fieldwork trip to the Chiriguano, in 1929. The paper discusses personal, academic and professional features of Métraux’s ethnological experience, the nature of the 1929 trip and his concrete relationships with the Chiriguano groups and individuals. Next, we analyse his ideas on material culture as a privileged means of understanding the synthesis of Andean, Chaco and Amazonian cultural influences. Finally, the dilemmas and limitations of his analytical approach regarding Créole cultural influence and social and cultural change are discussed. Se analiza la etnología temprana de Alfred Métraux a la luz de su primer viaje de campo a los chiriguanos, en 1929. Se discute el perfil personal, académico y profesional de Métraux, las peculiaridades de su trabajo de campo en 1929 y sus relaciones concretas con los indígenas chiriguanos en el terreno. Se examinan luego sus ideas sobre la cultura material como campo experimental privilegiado para rastrear procesos de síntesis de influencias culturales andinas, chaqueñas y amazónicas, así también sus dilemas y límites a la hora de interpretar el factor de la influencia criolla y el proceso de cambio social y cultural en un sentido amplio. El presente trabajo analiza la conformación del Gran Chaco como “área cultural” –según la definición de culture area propuesta por Clark Wissler– en la literatura del período “clásico” de los estudios etnológicos sobre la región. El texto elegido para abordar esta construcción teórica es el artículo de Álfred Métraux sobre el área chaquense que forma parte del “monumental” Handbook of Shouth American Indians dirigido por Julian Steward y publicado en 1948.

El estudio de la correspondencia entre los antropólogos Alfred Métraux (1902-1963) y Jules Henry (1904-1969) nos permite reconstruir la trastienda de la etnología chaqueña durante la década de 1930. Las cartas de ambos investigadores entre sí, como también aquellas otras dirigidas a diversas personalidades de su ámbito profesional (Ruth Benedict, Paul Rivet, John Arnott, Enrique Palavecino, etc.), ponen de manifiesto la operación cotidiana de las redes académicas, la maquinaria
logística del trabajo de campo, las opiniones descarnadas de Métraux sobre la academia o el mundo cultural argentino, las reacciones adversas de Henry ante el consejo de su interlocutor o bien la visión del antropólogo suizo sobre los misioneros anglicanos, los indígenas chaqueños y las instituciones científicas internacionales, revelando matices inesperados de la «cultura y personalidad» de ambos antropólogos. SUMMARY - The study of the correspondence between anthropologists Alfred Métraux (1902-1963) and Jules Henry (1904-1969) helps us to reconstruct the background to Chaco ethnology during the decade of the 1930s. The letters between Métraux and Henry, and between both of them and several academic correspondents (Ruth Benedict, Paul Rivet, John Arnott, Enrique Palavecino, etc.), show the daily operation of academic networks, the logistics machinery of ethnographic fieldwork, Métraux’s stark opinions about Argentinian academic and cultural milieu, Henry’s adverse reaction to his correspondent’s advice and Métraux’s thoughts on indigenous peoples, Anglican missionaries and international scientific institutions. In the process, they reveal unexpected nuances of the «culture and personality» of both anthropologists. Key words: Chaco; History of Anthropology; Alfred Métraux; Jules Henry.

Portée sur les fonts baptismaux par une hypothèse sensationnelle qui laissait augurer la découverte d’une écriture néolithique, la mission franco-belge Métraux-Lavachery à l’île de Pâques tint toutes ses promesses, mais d’une façon inattendue qui mit en déroute ses parrains en ce qu’elle les désavoua. Alfred Métraux et Henri Lavachery accostèrent fin juillet 1934 dans un lieu lourdement chargé d’histoires, indigène, coloniale, scientifique, qui s’enchevêtraient étroitement pour conférer à l’île de Pâques le statut de paradis perdu, a fortiori pour des ethnologues avides de pureté culturelle, d’authenticité inviolée. En 1934, les deux savants eurent affaire à une société déjà très ethnologisée, un « vieil os rongé » (Métraux) qui mettait au défi l’impératif de sauvetage ethnographique à la racine de toute mission ethnographique dans ces premières décennies du XXe siècle. C’est peu de dire que les conséquences des terribles exactions perpétrées dans les années 1860, la situation coloniale de l’île de Pâques, son statut de lieu mystérieux qui aimante explorateurs et savants, affectaient puissamment la façon dont le savoir ethnographique était recueilli auprès des informateurs indigènes - tout autant que la nature même de ce savoir.
Valorisant de nombreuses archives inédites, cet ouvrage fait une large place à la restitution du déroulement pratique de la mission, insistant tout particulièrement sur la qualité de la relation ethnographique nouée avec Juan Tepano et Victoria Rapahongo. Il rappelle l’importance des recherches archéologiques et ethnologiques menées par Alfred Métraux et Henri Lavachery en les resituant dans leur contexte, la vigueur de la polémique sur la nature du rongorongo, et le statut ambigu accordé à la production contemporaine d’objets d’art pascuan.
Comptant parmi les missions ethnographiques françaises des années 1930 effectuées hors du pré colonial français, la mission Métraux-Lavachery propulsa définitivement les études rapanui sur une orbite scientifique internationale.

Cet ouvrage est le troisième volume des Carnets de Bérose, une collection éditée électroniquement par le Lahic et le département du Pilotage de la recherche et de la politique scientifique de la Direction générale des patrimoines (ministère de la Culture). Il fait partie d’une série consacrée aux missions, enquêtes et terrains des années 1930.

Alfred Métraux a, par deux fois été en contact avec certains mystères propres aux cultures
insulaires : en 1934-1935, lorsqu’il se rendit en mission à l’île de Pâques, puis dans les années
1940, lorsque, en tant qu’ethnologue, il participa au programme de développement lancé par
l’Unesco dans la Vallée de Marbial. Ce fut à l’occasion de ce séjour prolongé en Haïti, qu’Alfred
Métraux en vint à étudier le vodou. Mais la campagne anti-superstitieuse qui sévissait à cette
époque, ne lui permit pas d’observer les rituels vodou dans la région de Marbial, mais à
Port-au-Prince et dans ses environs. En 1958, Alfred Métraux livra son étude sur le vodou qui
reste à ce jour encore une excellente introduction à cette religion populaire, qu’il tenait à sortir
du folklore pour l’étudier en fait social. Cet article s’appuie sur des documents d’archives peu
exploités jusqu’ici.

The paper explores the relationship between Swiss ethnographer Alfred Métraux and Scottish missionary John Arnott of the South American Missionary Society, which lasted almost a decade. The reciprocal influence between
these individuals is described with regard to both religious and academic factors. The paper also provides an analysis of the historical, social and political context of the Anglican missions in the Argentinian Chaco during 1933-1939, when Métraux did his ethnographic fieldwork.

Para evaluar el lugar que ocuparon la lengua nativa y los artefactos en la producción etnográfica de Métraux sobre los wichís del Gran Chaco se revisan sus publicaciones y algunos textos inéditos. Con sólo ojear su capítulo chaqueño para el Handbook of South American Indians o con recordar las colecciones que ingresó en diferentes museos, queda de manifiesto que la cultura material wichí tuvo en su obra una importancia decisiva. No sucede lo mismo con la lengua wichí. Por eso aquí se presenta una versión acondicionada y traducida del mito de « Pájaro Carpintero y la hija de Sol » que Métraux recogió en el terreno y dejó inédita, junto con otras historias, en una de sus libretas de campo; y se discute brevemente cuál es el valor de esta « nueva » versión del mito.

Este trabajo analiza la influencia de los maestros de Alfred Métraux, Marcel Mauss y Erland Nordenskiöld, en su formación académica, intelectual y profesional; y, en un sentido más general, el influjo teórico y metodológico de las ideas de la sociología francesa y la escuela de americanistas de Gotemburgo en la obra temprana del suizo, dedicada a la familia linguística tupí-guaraní en general y a los chiriguano y tupinambá en particular. Para ello se analizan sus escritos sobre la religión y el profetismo tupinambá; el proyecto pionero del Instituto de Etnología de Tucumán; el papel desempeñado por la ideología, los prejuicios de la época y la valoración estética en la recolección de objetos de cultura material; las peculiaridades del método de trabajo de campo de Métraux y su influencia en la relación con los chiriguano; la tesis de la alfarería chiriguano como elemento cristalizador de influencias culturales andinas, chaqueñas y amazónicas; y, finalmente, la relación significativa entre el simbolismo mítico y el universo femenino.

Jedes Individuum, das als unheilbar krank befunden wird, wird seinem Schicksal überlassen. Niemand schenkt ihm mehr Beachtung, denn "von dem Moment an, ab dem der Tod unvermeidbar ist, hat niemand mehr die Pflicht, weder ihm Essen zu geben, noch sich um ihn zu sorgen." Alsbald man merkt, dass sich der Kranke im Todeskampf befindet , eilen seine nächsten Verwandten mit so viel Wucht auf ihn, dass sie ihn mitunter ersticken. In Rio de Janeiro ist die Lobesrede Frauensache. Man lobt den Toten dafür, dass er viele Gefangene zu essen gebracht hatte. Daraufhin lobt ihn die Menge dafür, dass er ein ausgezeichneter Jäger und Fischer gewesen war. Die beste und prächtigste Beschreibung der Begräbniszeremonien gibt Thevet in seiner "Cosmographie universelle": "Nun, wenn irgendein Familienvater unter diesen Wilden verstorben ist, sei es im Krieg, aufgrund des Alters oder bei einem Unfall, so schneiden sich die Frauen unmittelbar nach der Feststellung die Haare ab, nachdem sie bereits einen Großteil davon unter schauerlichen Schmerzensschreien und äußerst frommen Klagen ausgerissen haben, die nicht nur ein, zwei Tage, andauern, sondern bis zu einem Zeitraum eines halben Jahres: Dennoch vollzieht sich das Begräbnis die vier beziehungsweise fünf ersten Tage nach dem Tod. This paper finds his starting point in the constant presence of the theatrical metaphor in the studies of possession rituals conducted by Leiris, Métraux and De Martino. The use of the theatrical metaphor attempts to account for a phenomenon that troubled modernity, through an historically vertiginous trajectory going from Plato to Sartre: the doubling of conscience in ritualistic actors. The paper focuses on the theoretical problems raised by the inescapable overlap between theatrical scene and ritualistic scene. First, I confront the three authors' approaches and demonstrate the inadequacy of the use of Sartre's bad faith. I show what this category hides: the production of an individual symbolism capable of answering a specific crisis. I then show the modern roots of the usage of the theatrical metaphor of the actor in order to explain the doubling of reflective self-consciousness, normal and pathological. Finally I identify a possible way out from this model.

The documentary Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness (2009) questions: ‘Who has the authority to define a culture – especially if people from that culture are denied the opportunity to engage in the scholarly discourse of defining themselves? Is there a politics of knowledge?’ (Herskovits, 2009: abstract). The interviews with historian Vincent Brown, who is also the film’s producer and director of research, and anthropologist Johnnetta B. Cole, in particular, question the power structures of academia. Cole asserts: ‘We don’t want to be the basis on which you […] write your books and get your tenure. We want to be full participants’ (Herskovits, 2009, 51 minutes). Throughout the documentary, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Brown, and Cole deliberate at once their admiration for Melville Herskovits’s devotion to – and in Cole’s words, also his ‘entanglement’ in – the study of African and African-American life (Herskovits, 2009, 17 minutes), as well as his commitment to decolonisation, but also his undercutting of W.E.B. Du Bois’s scholarship (Herskovits, 2009, 31 minutes). To answer the documentary’s overarching question, I consider how Herskovits’s and Alfred Métraux’s relationship both to Haiti and to what I refer to as their ‘Jewishness’ is related to a recent history of human rights that has at once racialised and also un-racialised ‘the Jew’,  creating a ‘politics of knowledge’ that is fraught with complexity, ambivalence and contradictions. More specifically, I address Brown’s and Cole’s questioning of the legitimacy of a white anthropologist of Jewish heritage, such as Herskovits, to study and posit himself as an expert of the experience of persons of African heritage throughout the Americas. As such, I consider contexts that I argue informed the intellectual environment in which Herskovits and Métraux worked.

This book recuperates the important history that Haitian thought around Vodou possession has had in French critical and literary theory as well as anthropology (Breton, Leiris, de Certeau, Lévi-Strauss, Métraux, Herskovits, Foucault, Butler, Athanasiou). The book offers the reader unfamiliar with Haiti a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of twentieth and early twenty-first century Haitian thought, including a detailed timeline of important moments in the intellectual history that connects Haiti to France and the United States. The first part of the book is about global dispossessions in the first decades of the twentieth century; the second part points to how the narratives of Haiti are intimately linked to a Franco-U.S.-American discursive space, constructed over the course of the twentieth century, a discursive order that has conflated the representation of Haiti with an understanding of Vodou primarily as an occult religion, and not as a philosophical system. The third and fourth parts of the book examine how the novels of René Depestre, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and Kettly Mars have revisited the notion of possession since the fall of the Duvalier dictatorships.
