Allium Cepa

Allium ursinum L. is widely used as a spice as well as a traditional medicine. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities (AMAs) of A. ursinum extract, obtained by pressurised-liquid extraction. Several reliable procedures such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2-azinobis-3ethyl benxothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid, ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assays were carried out. Vegetable oil stability was evaluated by using Rancimat test. Moreover, AMA was performed on different microorganisms. On the basis of the results obtained, it is confirmed that the A. ursinum extract could be used as a natural ingredient in food and/or pharmaceutical industries.

Through the use of direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS), 2-propenesulfenic acid, an intermediate long postulated as being formed when garlic (Allium sativum) is crushed, has been detected for the first time and determined by mass spectrometric methods to have a half-life of <1 s at room temperature. Two other key intermediates, 2-propenesulfinic acid and diallyl trisulfane S-oxide, have also been detected for the first time in volatiles from crushed garlic, along with allicin and related thiosulfinates, allyl alcohol, sulfur dioxide, propene, and pyruvate as coproducts. A commercial dietary supplement containing garlic powder, which was sampled after crushing, was found to contain alliin, methiin, and S-allylcysteine and produced allicin upon addition of water. DART-MS detection of 1-butenesulfenic acid from the ornamental A. siculum is also reported. (Z)-Propanethial S-oxide (onion lachrymatory factor), absent in garlic, is found to be formed from crushed elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum), consistent with the classification of this plant as a closer relative of leek than of garlic. Mixtures of thiosulfinates, lachrymatory thial S-oxides, and related compounds are directly observed from crushed leek (Allium porrum) and Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum). Disulfanes and polysulfanes are detected only when the Allium samples are heated, consistent with earlier conclusions that these are not primary products from cut or crushed alliums.

An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the West Bank to evaluate the relative efficacy of the plants used to treat skin diseases and prostate cancer. A total number of 102 informants, 30 years and older and either native born or had been living in the West Bank for more than 30 years, were interviewed using a previously prepared questionnaire. Of about 165 plant species mentioned by the informants, 63 (38.1%) were mentioned by three or more informants. On the basis of their primary uses, 21 of these plants were reported to relieve skin disorders, 17 for urinary system disorders, 16 for gastric disorders, nine for cancer and prostate disorders, eight for arthritis, five for respiratory problems, and five for other ailments. Indices on fidelity levels (FLs), relative popularity level (RPL), and rank-order priority (ROP) were calculated. Plants were classified in two groups: 'popular' (RPL = 1) or 'unpopular' (RPLB 1). The following plant species were classified as popular in this study: Teucrium polium, Matricaria aurea, Urtica pilulifera, Paronychia argentea, Petroselinum sati6um, and Sal6ia fruticosa. The remaining 57 species were classified as 'unpopular'. Fifty-nine plants were claimed to be effective against cancer and prostate disorders, which include Arum dioscorides, U. pilulifera, Allium sati6um, Viscum cruciatum, and Allium cepa.

Center rot of onion, caused by Pantoea ananatis, has been a problem of sweet onions in Georgia since 1997. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol was developed to screen for populations of P. ananatis on plant surfaces. Plant samples producing a positive PCR reaction were targeted for further processing to culture the bacterium. In a survey of the Vidalia onion-growing region of Georgia, we detected and cultured P. ananatis from 25 asymptomatic weed species, which included commonly occurring weeds such as crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), Florida beggarweed (Desmodium tortuosum), Florida pusley (Richardia scabra), sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia), Texas Millet (Panicum texanum), tall verbena (Verbena bonariensis) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus). In addition, the bacterium was recovered from crop plants such as Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and soybean (Glycine max). Based on the field survey and tests with strains held in storage in the Coastal Plain Experiment Station culture collection, we concluded that P. ananatis was in Georgia prior to 1997, and was distributed widely on weeds and crops throughout southern Georgia. r

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the ethyl acetate and water subfractions of methanolic extracts of three Spanish onion varieties were assayed. Flavonoids were mainly present in ethyl acetate subfraction being 34.92 ± 0.75, 7.95 ± 0.16, 0.38 ± 0.01 lmol of rutin eq. g )1 D.W. and its antioxidant capacity was 74.86 ± 1.77, 24.59 ± 0.67, 4.55 ± 0.44 lmol Trolox g )1 D.W. of Grano de Oro, Fuentes de Ebro and Calc¸ot de Valls varieties, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of flavonol standards and onion extracts was evaluated against some food spoiler microorganisms. Quercetin and kaempferol were inhibitory against gram positive bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Microcroccus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes. Gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were less sensible to the antimicrobial effect of both flavonol standards and Candida albicans was totally resistant. Among the onion extracts tested only ethyl acetate subfraction showed antimicrobial inhibition.

Allium stracheyi Baker (Alliaceae, 2600–3000 m asl), an endangered species of Central Himalaya, India, has low seed germination in its natural habitat. This study is an attempt to improve seed germination by determining the seed viability with a low mean germination time (MGT) and germination index (GI) under optimum temperature, light, and pre-soaking treatments. The seeds were pre-soaked in hot water (80°C), cold water (10°C), and gibberellic acid (GA3 at 50 and 100 mg/l) for 24 h and subjected to light (12 h light and 12 h dark) and continuous dark (24 h) conditions with different temperature regimes (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30°C). The viability varied between 66.0% and 69.67% and declined rapidly after 12 months of storage. Our studies suggest that the 100 mg/l GA3 treatment was beneficial for seed germination and seedling growth. Pre-soaking in a 100 mg/l GA3 solution and incubation at 20°C under light conditions enhanced the germination significantly (p < 0.05) and resulted in the highest (97.3%) germination with the lowest MGT = 5.7 days, with GI = 8.11. The recommendations of this study support the conservation of alpine A. stracheyi via simple and cost-effective techniques for optimal seed germination.

The food industry produces a large amount of onion wastes, making it necessary to search for possible ways for their utilization. One way could be to use these onion wastes as a natural source of high-value functional ingredients, since onion are rich in several groups of compounds, which have perceived benefits to human health. The objective of this work is to gain knowledge of any differences between the different onion wastes obtained from industry and non-commercial bulbs to use them as food ingredients rich in specific compounds. The results showed that brown skin and top-bottom could be potentially used as functional ingredient rich in dietary fibre, mainly in insoluble fraction, and in total phenolics and flavonoids, with high antioxidant activity. Moreover, brown skin showed a high concentration of quercetin aglycone and calcium, and top-bottom showed high concentration of minerals. Outer scales could be used as source of flavonols, with good antioxidant activity and content of dietary fibre. However, inner scales could be an interesting source of fructans and alk(en)yl cystein sulphoxides. In addition, discarded onions (cvs Recas and Figueres) could be used as a good source of dietary fibre, and cv Recas also as a source of phenolics compounds.

The effects of hydroponic nutrient solution composition and pH on growth and mineral content of green onions was evaluated. Three onion varieties [Allium cepa L. ('Deep Purple' and 'Purplette') and A. fistulosum L. ('Kinka')] were propagated in three nutrient solutions (Peter's Hydro-Sol, modified Hoagland's, and half-strength modified Hoagland's) at two pH levels (5.8 and 6.5) in a three-by-two factorial design applied in a randomized block with three replications. Seeds were germinated in Cropking's Oasis Horticubes under greenhouse conditions and irrigated with tap water. Once the seedlings reached the flag stage, the plants were placed into hydroponic units within the greenhouse and grown under ambient conditions. Plants were harvested 30 d after transplanting to the hydroponic units. The results indicated nutrient solution, pH, and variety significantly affected several plant physiological variables. Total biomass and edible biomass production was as high for plants grown in half-strength Hoagland's nutrient solution as for those grown in the other solutions. Total biomass was greatest for plants grown at a solution pH of 6.5. 'Deep Purple' produced a significantly greater overall total biomass than did 'Purplette' or 'Kinka.' Hydro-Sol tended to produce onions with highest mineral content. Due to the fact that biomass production was as great in the half-strength Hoagland's as in the more concentrated solution and that a pH of 6.5 produced greater total biomass, the half-strength Hoagland's solution at pH 6.5 was the preferred nutrient solution evaluated in this research. Selection of an appropriate nutrient solution must consider both edible biomass production and mineral content. In the research reported here, the solution that produced the greatest biomass did not produce plant material with the highest mineral content.

A separation/enrichment procedure has been developed for the determination of selenium in garlic and onion samples by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS) as a slurry sampling after preconcentration with 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) reagent on the activated carbon. The influences of pH, time, amount of carbon and complexing reagent were outlined. The effect of acids used in the digestion of samples was also studied and compared. Selenium level was found to be 0.024 lg g À1 for onion (n = 5; LOD -0.5 lg L À1 ; LOQ -1.7 lg L À1 ) and 0.015 lg g À1 for garlic (n = 5; LOD -1.3 lg L À1 ; LOQ -3.3 lg L À1 ). Three different samples of garlic were analyzed by k 0 -instrumental neutron activation analysis (k 0 -INAA) at the Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI). The data obtained by k 0 -INAA show that the content of selenium overlapped the results obtained by ET-AAS.

An extensive phytochemical analysis of the polar extracts from bulbs of shallot, Allium ascalonicum Hort., led to the isolation of two new furostanol saponins, named ascalonicoside A1/A2 (1a/1b) and ascalonicoside B (4), respectively, along with compounds 2a and 2b, most likely extraction artifacts. On the basis of 2D NMR and mass spectrometry data, the structures of the novel compounds were elucidated as furost-5 -en-3 ,22R-diol 1 -O--D-galactopyranosyl 26-O-[R-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1f2)-O--D-glucopyranoside] (1a), its epimer at position 22 (1b), and furost-5(6),20(22)-dien-3 -ol 1 -O--D-galactopyranosyl 26-O-[R-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1f2)-O--D-glucopyranoside] ( . This is the first report of furostanol saponins in A. ascalonicum. High concentrations of quercetin, isorhamnetin, and their glycosides were also isolated and described.
